OpenTV Partners with Jinni to Bring Next Generation Functionality to the Television

One provider of advanced digital television solutions has collaborated with Jinni to bring next generation search and recommendation functionality to the television. These new features will enable viewers to find their desired content quickly and intuitively, and OpenTV (News - Alert) says that viewers can expect these features in its soon to be released OpenTV Core2 middleware.

OpenTVwill combine its Core2 Search Feature with Jinni’s ‘Mood Based’ content discovery to allow viewers to find their desired programs quickly across multiple content sources.

Officials claimed that their collaboration with Jinni will change the way content is discovered on television, Jinni’s approach to search, discovery and recommendations will complement OpenTV’s middleware technology allowing consumers to easily find what they really ‘feel’ like watching.

Their integrated solution will enable their customers to deliver a television-centric search product far beyond what is available today and the company believes that this unique capability will be an exciting differentiator for their customers as they define their consumer experience.

Jinni also expressed excitement in collaborating with OpenTV to bring these next generation features to the TV. Users in order to find the program they want have to do a lot of guesswork and they usually are reluctant to explore. Jinni feels that the process of choosing what to watch should be fun and that is why they have developed a unique approach that takes into consideration the personal and emotional aspects of choosing a movie, by reflecting how people think and talk about what they watch. Their method simplifies the process for viewers to find the content they want without all the hassle.

The OpenTV-Jinni mood-based functionality goes beyond basic search for programming titles viewers know they want to watch by providing choices based on what they feel like watching. For example if a viewer wishes to watch a ‘dark comedy thriller’ movie then they can search for just that without needing to recall any film they had previously heard of or seen.

Viewers can search directly for moods such as “funny,” “dark,” “suspenseful,” or “gripping,” removing the cumbersome middle step that often prevents people from using search. They can also customize their mood settings along with more common search strings like era, genre.

Some of the highlights of OpenTV Core2 search solution include: Integrated Search functionality – viewers can search programs beyond the basic ‘program title list’ using keywords, synopsis; Extended Search – allows viewers to search online databases; and Predictive Text Entry – a high-end search feature requires an easy and fast way to enter in search strings using a standard television remote.
