Netflix App Coming to Sony Playstation 3

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

Netflix and Sony are collaborating on a new application that will bring a host of new benefits to PlayStation 3 owners.

Currently, Netflix subscribers have to insert a special Blu-ray disc into their PS3 to stream movies or other programming on their console. Beginning on Oct. 18, members will be able to download the free app and search for content right off the main screen of their PS3, completely eliminating the need for the supplementary disc. Due to the fact that the app runs natively on the console, Sony is promising "dramatic improvements" in content load time and a much richer browsing experience, according to CNET.

The PS3 will join Microsoft's (News - Alert) Xbox 360 as the only gaming systems that offer native Netflix streaming. The Nintendo Wii still requires that users insert a disc to access programming.

Furthermore, Sony announced in a recent blog post that a fair number of Netflix movies and television shows will be available in 1080p high definition and Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, due to a partnership between Netflix and Dolby Laboratories (News - Alert).

"Netflix is committed to delivering an unparalleled experience to its members who watch TV shows and movies streamed instantly over the Internet," said Greg Peters, vice president of product development at Netflix.

"This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable," he added.

In contrast, Xbox 360 owners can only stream content with a maximum resolution of 720p and traditional stereo sound.

It is still unclear how many Netflix titles with the highest quality picture and sound will be available on the PS3.

In related news, Netflix announced earlier this month that it extended its license agreement with NBC Universal (News - Alert). The multi-year deal will give Netflix subscribers the ability to access content from any of NBC's networks.
