Broadcom's Bluetooth(R) Technology Enables Advanced Multimedia Features in New TCL Communications Multimedia Handset

BARCELONA, Spain, 3GSM World Congress, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation , a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its industry-leading Bluetooth(R) silicon and software technology have been selected by TCL Communications to enable advanced wireless multimedia features, such as music streaming, in a number of new phones. TCL Communications, a leading telephone manufacturer in China, selected Broadcom's single-chip BCM2045 Bluetooth transceiver with enhanced data rate (EDR) technology and Broadcom(R) Bluetooth Embedded (BTE) mobile software, for its recently announced multimedia handset, which is being made available as the Alcatel OT-C825.

Multimedia features, such as digital music and graphics imaging, are rapidly becoming standard functions in mobile phone handsets. The ability to wirelessly enable these features for end-users is making Bluetooth a key component in these products, securing its position as the premier short range wireless technology in the mobile industry. While Bluetooth in mobile handsets primarily connects mono headsets for wireless hands-free connectivity, the improved bandwidth made possible by EDR functionality, coupled with new software profiles that enable high quality audio streaming, is moving Bluetooth technology to the center of the mobile multimedia user experience.

"The new Alcatel OT-C825 multimedia handset from TCL Communications exemplifies the industry's trend towards affordable multimedia phones that provide cutting-edge features and sophisticated Bluetooth functionality for consumers to enjoy in new and exciting ways," said Scott Bibaud, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Bluetooth line of business. "Our single-chip silicon and Bluetooth software provide the richest multimedia capabilities in the industry, including the ability to stream high quality audio to wireless stereo headsets. We are very pleased with our role in making these compelling handsets a reality."

"TCL strives to provide the most advanced digital audio and video experience available in mobile handsets, with Bluetooth playing a key role in enhancing the functionality we've built into our phones," said Dr. Fei Liu, CEO of TCL Communications. "With Broadcom's Bluetooth technology, we can provide the level of sound quality that ensures the user experience our customers have grown to expect from our multimedia products."
