China Unicom to Launch Wi-Fi-based iPhone


BEIJING, Aug 06, 2010 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, and SHSE: 600050), a leading Chinese telecommunications carrier, officially confirms that the iPhone smart phone of Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) compatible with the Wi-Fi technology will be available in China from August 9, 2010.



Since October 2009, when iPhone hit the Chinese market, the smart phone has won the favor of local customers, particularly, after China Unicom provided new service packages for iPhone, the smart phone has been suffering from supply shortages in the country.

A top executive of China Unicom in charge of mobile phone sales reveals that the iPhone launched this time is 8GB iPhone3GS, which is also based on the WAPI standard. Its selling price is still CNY 4,999, with certain service packages that present customers with subsidies and handsets.


The latest version of iPhone will be sold in outlets of China Unicom, franchise stores of Apple, retail chains of Suning Appliance Co., Ltd. (SZSE: 002024) and other authorized shops.
