Greenbrier to repeat discount room offer

Sep 10, 2010 (The Charleston Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- For a second year, The Greenbrier resort is offering special discounted rates on selected dates from December through March.

Rates will be as low as $59 midweek and $109 on weekends, plus resort fees and taxes. The discount "Tribute to the Virginias" packages will be available for booking, starting at noon today.

"There are a lot more [discounted] selected dates being offered this year," said Lynn Swann, The Greenbrier's spokeswoman.

The resort is also offering discounted meal plans for guests. One $50-per-person package includes a breakfast buffet in the Main Dining Room and dinner at The Forum, Draper's or In-Fusion restaurants. Dinner at the Main Dining Room will cost an extra $55 per person, or at the Prime 44 West steakhouse for an extra $85.

The discounted room packages include morning coffee service, wireless Internet, historical tours, use of the fitness center and indoor pool, afternoon tea, nightly movies and culinary demonstrations.

The resort's owner, Jim Justice, said the discount packages are a way of celebrating the success of The Greenbrier Classic PGA golf tournament and the opening of an $80 million casino at the resort.

"This has been a simply incredible year for The Greenbrier with the star-studded, red-carpet opening of the Casino Club and the inaugural Greenbrier Classic, which was viewed by millions in over 200 countries around the globe," Justice said.

"We owe so much of our success to the people of this region, and we wanted to bring back the tribute package as our way of saying, 'Thank you.' " Each guest who purchases the discount package will receive $5 worth of video slot play.

The Casino Club, which opened in July, has 320 video poker machines and 35 table games, including roulette, blackjack, baccarat, craps and three-card poker. There's a nightly champagne toast at 10 p.m.

The resort's newest amenities include laser tag and ice skating.

Last year, the $59 rooms sold out quickly. The Greenbrier offered discounts on 16 dates.

The Greenbrier's typical standard room rates run about $250 to $275 during the winter months.

Reservations for the "Tribute to the Virginias" package can be made starting at noon Saturday by going to the resort's website at www.greenbrier.com. For more information, call 800-453-4858. A two-night stay, as well as a non-refundable deposit, is required.

Those wanting to make reservations are encouraged to use the website, Swann said. Last year, reservation agents were overwhelmed by calls, and many patrons complained they were unable to make reservations by phone.

Although The Greenbrier is calling its promotion "The Tribute to the Virginias," the discounted rates will be available to all future guests -- not just those who live in West Virginia and Virginia.
