Behind the Facemask with Lynden's Marcus Fakkema

Nov 09, 2012 (The Bellingham Herald (Bellingham - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Year: Senior Position: Offensive lineman/defensive lineman Height: 6-foot-3 Weight: 250 pounds Question: How did you first start playing football A: My dad signed me up for LYS (Lynden Youth Sports) football because it was the first year I was allowed to.

Q: What do you like most about playing football A: Getting that intense feeling when you make a big play.

Q: What is your favorite part of game night A: Definitely the prayer before we head out onto the field.

Q: What is your favorite football memory A: Taking a picture with Eddie Wilson after winning state last year. It was the last time I got to see him.

Q: What is your favorite play to run on game night and why A: It's a 78, where Matt (Meyer) and I leave to lead block for a receiver, and we get to drill some little D-backs.

Q: Who is the funniest guy on your team and why A: Ryan Priestman for sure. Whenever you need a good laugh or are having a rough day, he can always make it better with a laugh.

Q: What is your usual/favorite pregame meal A: Subway -- I get an Italian BMT on Italian herbs and cheese with a lot of stuff on it.

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals/superstitions A: I listen to the same song before every game. It's a song that my best friend Kelson (Ammons) and I listened to before his big motocross races and it gets me jacked up. Also, I always have to have Harmin Mattu put my jersey on me every game.

Q: Is there a reason you chose your jersey number A: Yes I was No. 63 last year, because Coach (Curt) Kramme gave it to me, but I changed it to No. 52 this year, because I saw Eddie Wilson wearing a No. 52 jersey, and that was the main reason. Also, it is backwards of my lacrosse number, which is 25.

Q: What position, other than the ones you currently play, would you like to try and why A: I've always wanted to be a safety. It just looks like fun to line up big hits like my buddy Zach Vis.

Q: What drill do you dislike running the most in practice A: Probably, just like everyone would say on our team, is tackling circuit. It's the best drill for us in the long run, it's just so repetitive.

Q: Do you root for the Huskies or Cougars and why A: Huskies all the way, but I don't mind the Cougs. They both represent our state, so I like them both. And my lineman buddy Matt Meyer is committed to WSU, so I kinda have to like them.

Q: Who is your favorite NFL player and why A: Wes Welker. He's one of the smallest guys out on the field, but also one of the toughest. He gets beat up out there.

Q: What do you think is the best sports movie and why A: "Glory Road" is the best underdog story. Ever since I watched it in Leadership, it's been my favorite.

Q: What other sports do you like to play A: Lacrosse and basketball.

Q: What do you plan to do after you are done with high school A: I plan to go play lacrosse in college, hopefully in California. If not, I want to go to BTC (Bellingham Technical College) to learn the trade of welding.

Q: What other hobbies do you have A: I love to go out on the weekends and just hang with friends and some times go ride dirt bikes.

Q: What is the most played song on your iPod A: "God Gave Me You" by Blake Shelton.

Q: What is your favorite TV show and why A: "Friends" for sure. I have all 10 seasons on DVD, and I know every line to every episode.

Q: What is your favorite video game A: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Q: What is your most favorite and least favorite class in school and why A: Ceramics is my most favorite, because I get to be creative, and Spanish is my least favorite. I just can't learn another language. I'm not good at it.
