City upgrading Barton entrance

Jan 01, 2013 (The Wilson Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The city of Wilson plans to help with visual improvements to the Barton College entrance and surrounding areas in the upcoming year.

Wilson City Council, which recently received a report from city staff, supports the project that will involve roadway improvements, the addition of decorative street lights, new water and sewer lines, the underground placement of utilities, addition of new traffic signals and stormwater drainage improvements. The estimated cost is $975,000, an amount the city could pay for during the next two years, said Grant Goings, Wilson city manager.

Bryant Bunn, an engineer with the city of Wilson, recently gave the council an update and cost estimate of the project. City leaders decided to tackle the entire project at once, instead of doing portions of the project during the next several years. City officials viewed the move as more efficient and cost-effective.

The largest focus of the project is at the intersection of Atlantic Christian College Drive and Vance Street, where the city plans to add brick pavers at each of the four corners and brick-paved crosswalks across each street, Bunn said.

"All four corners are going to have brick pavers," Bunn said. "All the bricks are going to be the same." The city will also replace 40 to 50-year-old water and sewer lines as well as storm drainage lines at the intersection. Electric, broadband and telephone lines will also be placed underground.

The largest cost of the project will involve placing electric lines underground along ACC Drive from Nash Street to the roundabout at ACC Drive, Raleigh Road Parkway and Corbett Avenue. Also planned along ACC Drive, for several blocks from Nash to the roundabout, are decorative street lights. The lights will be the same as those used along Nash Street in downtown Wilson.

Two new steel, mast-arm traffic signal poles will also be added at the ACC and Nash Street intersection and will replace wooden traffic signal poles.

The project is estimated to cost $975,000, with roadway improvements at $250,000, storm drainage at $45,000, water improvements at $70,000, sewer improvements at $110,000, mast arm traffic signal poles at $100,000 and the addition of electric, broadband, telephone lines and decorative light poles at $400,000.

The project is expected to start in the spring or summer of 2013, Bunn said.
