Bitmovin Joins the Alliance for Open Media

SAN FRANCISCO, April 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Bitmovin, industry leading encoding, player and analytics provider and co-creator of the MPEG-DASH video streaming standard, today announced that it has joined the Alliance for Open Media. The Alliance for Open Media is a non-profit organization working to define and develop media technologies that address the need for an open standard for video compression and delivery over the web.

As a member of the Alliance, Bitmovin will collaborate with industry leaders in pursuit of an open and royalty-free AOMedia Video codec, AV1. Bitmovin has actively worked in video and streaming standardization and has driven standards from inception to implementation. Bitmovin's founders co-created the MPEG-DASH streaming standard used by Netflix, YouTube, and many others, and is responsible for over 50% of peak U.S. internet traffic. Given its encoding, virtualization and codec expertise, Bitmovin is excited to contribute to the AV1 codec, enabling an encoding solution that delivers high quality at low bitrates and fast turnarounds, comparable to what customers currently experience. The Alliance has made its AV1 codec source code publicly available as an open source project, and the group welcomes contributions from the broader developer community. Bitmovin will showcase the first ever AV1 Live Streaming demo, delivering 1080p playback at 1.5Mbps in broadcast quality, reducing storage and CDN costs by up to 10x, at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 24-27, 2017 (booth SU9007CM).

"We are very excited to be joining the Alliance for Open Media and to be the first company to integrate the AOMedia Video codec, AV1, into our products supporting both live streaming and video-on-demand," said Stefan Lederer, CEO of Bitmovin. "This alliance exemplifis our focus on being a first mover in the video streaming domain and we look forward to working with the other members to deliver a next-generation video format."

The availability of AOMedia Video as an open source project is an important element in fulfilling the organization's promise to deliver a next-generation video format that is:

  • Interoperable and open;
  • Optimized for internet delivery;
  • Scalable to any modern device at any bandwidth;
  • Designed with a low computational footprint and optimized for hardware;
  • Capable of consistent, highest-quality, real-time video delivery; and
  • Flexible for both commercial and non-commercial content, including user-generated content.

"We're pleased to welcome Bitmovin to the Alliance for Open Media, reflecting the importance of video encoding and player providers' engagement to achieve broad industry adoption," said Gabe Frost, Executive Director, the Alliance for Open Media. "We look forward to Bitmovin's contributions to this significant initiative, which will open the door to a new era of openness and interoperability for internet video."
