ICYMI: What's Circulating in the Internet Telephony Space?

By Greg Tavarez June 28, 2024

The internet telephony landscape is vast, with options for individuals, small businesses and large enterprises. (Just take a peek at Internet Telephony Magazine for coverage.)

Instead of relying on traditional phone lines, internet telephony has changed the game by transmitting voice calls and other data like faxes and video chats over the internet using a technology called VoIP. Think of it like sending emails, but with your voice.

This shift to internet telephony offers a wave of benefits. For starters, it's often cheaper than traditional phone plans. Plus, features like voicemail and call forwarding are frequently included. Businesses can leverage internet telephony for features like video conferencing and integrated communication systems, boosting collaboration.

But there's a catch; see, internet telephony relies on a strong internet connection. That Wi-Fi network you use to browse the web? That's your lifeline for making calls over the internet. A weak or spotty Wi-Fi connection can lead to dropped calls and choppy audio – not ideal for an important business meeting.

From basic calling features to advanced functionalities like video conferencing and voicemail integration, internet telephony offers a versatile way to connect.

With that said, let’s look at a few developments happening around the space.

DTEN Bar with DTEN Mate Achieves Microsoft (News - Alert) Teams Rooms Certification

DTEN's video conferencing solution, DTEN Bar with DTEN Mate, is now certified for Microsoft Teams Rooms. This means users can enjoy a seamless video conferencing experience with features like noise suppression, high-quality camera and audio, and flexible mounting options. The system is designed for small rooms and can be used with various platforms including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and BYOD.

SONIFI Releases Event Manager

SONIFI, a company in hospitality technology, released a new tool called Event Manager. This tool allows hotels to easily set up secure and customized Wi-Fi networks for conferences and events happening on their property. Event managers can personalize the network with a unique access code, branding, and messages.

Additionally, they can control bandwidth and user access, and schedule the network to be available only during the event. This allows hotels to improve their conference service offerings and potentially attract more customers by providing a reliable and convenient internet experience for event attendees.

Comms Group Limited Granted License to Resell VoIP Services in Philippines

Comms Group Limited was granted a license by the Philippines National Telecommunications Commission to resell VoIP services in the Philippines. This will allow Comms Group to offer VoIP services including UC and SIP trunking to businesses in the Philippines and around the world.

Comms Group plans to leverage its global network and collaborate with local partners to deliver these services. The Philippines is a key market for Comms Group's expansion in Asia-Pacific and adds to their existing licenses in Australia, New Zealand and several other countries in the region.

SCTelcom and Calix (News - Alert) Partnership Improves Customer Experience

SCTelcom, a rural broadband provider, partnered with Calix to improve subscriber experience and revenue with SmartLife managed services. They achieved this by:

  • Extending high-speed internet to various places like parks and schools with SmartTown, increasing outdoor wireless connectivity by 75%.
  • Offering secure Wi-Fi and other services to small businesses with SmartBiz, growing their average revenue per user (ARPU) by 3%.
  • Maintaining high customer satisfaction with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 79, more than double the industry average.

Calix's Smart Start for Managed Services program helped SCTelcom quickly launch these services and Calix Business Insights Services helped them refine the offerings based on customer feedback.

When it comes to the internet telephony sector, innovation is important. Advancements, like the ones above, only further enhance communication efficiency and effectiveness.

There’s also a chance to learn about advancements in the internet telephony space at ITEXPO 2025, taking place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, February 11-13, 2025, part of the #TECHSUPERSHOW. Since 1999, ITEXPO (News - Alert) has combined educational conference programming with a robust exhibit hall, networking events, and other activities, bringing together buyers and providers of business technology products and services that drive business success.
